Excerpt from animation by Ezra Wube of an on-going research project by AD–WO

When the Tel Aviv Museum of Art invited us to participate in their exhibition South of the Sahara: Accelerated Urbanism in Africa, we decided to collaborate with animation artist Ezra Wube. Starting from its initial role as a container that separated the local population from the newcomers during the Italian occupation, to its most recent identity as a center for experimentation in vertical development, Addis Merkato has maintained relevance by relentlessly translating limits into opportunities. Each episode of its transformational narrative has left an architectural imprint that has redefined its relationship to the city of Addis Ababa. The current proliferation of vertical mall types is yet another attempt to solidify a market that has always been on the move.
